Things To Do In Bath

Bath's Top Tourist Attractions
Bath and the surrounding Somerset countryside is one of the most beautiful places in Britain. Stunning Georgian architecture, interesting museums, excellent shops, theatres and cinemas make Bath a great place to visit at any time of year.

Bath's Must-See Famous Sights

Pulteney Bridge
Pulteney Bridge is one of the most beautiful and romantic bridges in the world and is one of only a handful of historic bridges which has shops built into it. It is best viewed from the nearby beautiful Parade Gardens. Take a walk over Pulteney Bridge towards the Holburne Museum and walk down Great Pulteney Street. Here you will see a fine example of Bath's grand Georgian terraces in one of the most splendid streets in Bath.

Bath Abbey
In the heart of the city, next to the Roman Baths, is the splendid Bath Abbey, a 15th century medieval church with a remarkable carved frontage and amazing fan vaulting. The Abbey is a former Benedictine monastery built on a site where Christian worship has taken place for over 1,000 years. Bath Abbey Heritage vaults houses a museum that explores the history of the site.

Roman Baths and Pump Room
The Baths are one of the country's finest ancient monuments. Visitors are able to see the ruins of the temple of Minerva, the goddess of the thermal spring, and visit the bath house where the Romans bathed. You can explore the baths by torchlight on a summer' evening; they are open until 10.00 pm in July and August with last entry at 9.00 pm.

The Royal Crescent

This is one of the greatest examples of Georgian architecture to be found in the UK. It was built between 1767 and 1774 by the architect John Wood the younger. No. 1 Royal Crescent is a small museum which has been restored to show how the interior of a house would have looked in the late eighteenth century. This elegant Georgian crescent overlooks Royal Victoria Park - the perfect place to stop and enjoy a picnic with the beautiful Royal Crescent as your backdrop.

The Circus

A short walk from the Royal Crescent is the Circus. The CircusĀ is an example of Bath's striking Georgian architecture with fine detailed Bath stone carvings built in the eighteenth century and designed by John Wood the elder.

Royal Victoria Park

The park lies below the Royal Crescent and stretches for over 57 acres. It was originally laid out as an arboretum and contains a superb collection of trees. There is also a boating pond, tennis courts, a bowling green, a small golf course and an extensive childrens play area.

Museum of Costume

A world class collection of contemporary and historic dress housed in the Assembly rooms, one of Baths finest Georgian buildings. The Museum tells the story of fashion from 1600 to the present day.

The Jane Austen Centre

Located in a Georgian town house in Gay Street, this permanent exhibition enables you to find out about Bath in Jane Austens time and how the city influenced her life and work.

Thermae Bath Spa

The Spa has two pools (one is a spectacular open-air rooftop pool) where you can bathe in the naturally warm spring water as the Romans did 2000 years ago. There are also steam rooms, a choice of 50 spa treatments and an attractive restaurant. Open until 10pm every evening (last entry 7.30pm).

Cinemas

Spend a relaxing evening at one of the two cinemas in Bath. Our favourite, The Little Theatre is the only remaining independent cinema in Bath. Alternatively, watch the latest blockbuster movie at the Bath Odeon Cinema on James Street West

Theatres

Theatres in Bath offer a wide selection of performances to cater for all tastes. The main theatre in Bath is the Theatre Royal offering a year round programme of top-quality drama, opera, comedy, dance and frequent Sunday concerts. The Ustinov Theatre offers a more cutting edge programme of performances in Bath. For children, young people and their families there is the Egg Theatre.

Prior Park Garden

An eighteenth century landscape garden with magnificent views of the city of Bath. The 28 acre garden, owned by The National Trust, is listed grade 1 by English Heritages register of parks and gardens. The cottage overlooks the Parks Palladian Bridge and lakes. Guests are allowed to visit the garden free of charge when it is open to the public.

The Bath Skyline:

The National Trust owns around 500 acres of land in the South-East of Bath known as the Bath Skyline. There is a popular 6 mile walk in this area through woods and meadows which can be accessed from the back door of the cottage. Maps are provided.
